Excess back fat is a problem for many people, especially those who are approaching or indeed are well in to middle age, it is part of the blight known as middle-age spread (MAS), where the abdominal area of the body develops a roll of fat, sometimes called a "spare tire". There are a number of reasons for the onset of MAS, firstly there is the unstoppable effect of gravity. Forty-odd years of walking upright takes its toll as looser-fitting areas of skin are gradually pulled "south," other affected areas are face, breasts and neck.
