Another food post

Yes, I'm still on the subject....and no, I'm not obsessed. Just working through a few things. :o) Here's the deal - after a couple of months of maintenance, my body isn't all that happy about reducing calories. I've coped OK so far, and I was actually a bit surprised that my hunger levels have been quite low. I only get seriously hungry just before the time of day when I'd usually have a meal, and that's normal anyway, whether I'm following a weight-loss plan, or eating a lot more. BUT...

7 deadly sins meme..

Wrath.. 1. Who did you last get angry with? I get angry a lot lately.. I think though with my boss - that was the last full blown angry anger. 2. What is your weapon of choice? Glaring silence.. 3. Would you hit a member of the opposite sex? Have done.. hope I never feel I have to again.. 4. How about of the same sex? No.. I don't think it's in me.. Unless UNLESS I am being tickled.. I lose all control if someone unlocks my secret ticklish spot.. 5. Who was the last pe

Eating Right

Eating Right 28 Jun 2008 | 12:32 am | By Demara The weight has started to drop again. Woohoo! I don’t know why I always seem to lose weight between June and September but I do. So I better eat really healthy these next 4 months so that I can drop another 40lbs, but my aim is to lose more than that. I hope to be down 55lbs by the end of September. Since this seems to be the only time I lost weight last year I might as well take advantage of it. Today I had hummus on crisp bread and LOVED

5.2 KM

Last night before going out for a run, I bought some ankle support bandages. As you might know, I twisted my foot in a small scooter accident a few weeks ago. It’s doing better, but I ice it down daily and keep a bandage on it at most times. Running doesn’t hurt, but sometimes my foot will bend in a way that will hurt a little bit. Anyways, I’ve had worse injuries. Yesterday, I had two eggs with a little bit of bacon and cheese for breakfast. For lunch I had 1L of fresh OJ. Since I had eaten

Frustrated With Healthy Eating

Also Published On I Don’t Want to Die of a Heart Attack When I’m 25 Although I have been steadily losing weight, many of my food choices have not been very good these past few weeks. I’ve been thinking about going back to just having a cheat day once a week, so that I eat cleaner. Of course I want to continue losing weight, but I don’t want to do it eating sesame chicken and french fries everyday. It’s not just about fitting into size medium shirts for me, I want to be a healthy individual

Finally A Card....

Hello all..... I don't feel refreshed, but it sure felt nice to take a break. Here is a recap of my day today.... I dropped CY4 off to school, then off to the mall. I went shopping for a dress. We are going to a wedding this weekend, and CY3 would like for me to look GORGEOUS. I don't like clothes shopping. I don't like trying on clothes, and finding out that they don't fit me. I finally convinced myself to accept that I am no longer a size 7, but now a size 14... I knew for a while now, but I

Tomorrow I am willingly partaking in the ultimate evil: cross border shopping at Colville's Wally World. This is actually a local shopping mecca because it's about an hour's drive and the food section alone is three times bigger than our largest local grocery store. The entire Wally World is three times the size of our local Wally World.

Weight Loss Strategies - Use Your Camera

Taking pictures of yourself is an excellent strategy to help you lose and keep off unwanted pounds. The key to using this strategy effectively is knowing: Why you should take pictures of yourself, What type of pictures to take, and Where to put your pictures Why you should take pictures of yourself To compare yourself now to your "best" self - It is much easier to compare a current picture of yourself to your high school graduation picture, than it is ...

STORM FROM THE SHADOWS - Snippet 03

STORM FROM THE SHADOWS - Snippet 03: The Havenite commander didn't wait for the task force's fire to reach him. In fact, he fired at almost the same instant Honor's first salvo launched against him, and whereas Task force Eighty-Two had fired just under three hundred missiles at him, he fired the next best thing to eleven thousand in reply. "Damn," Commander Manfredi said almost mildly as the enemy returned more than thirty-six missiles for each one TF 82 had just fired at

Buying and Selling Services

Photo courtesy of iStockphoto, Ravi Tahilramani In a recent posting, Arun Purohit described an interesting disconnect between the sales approach of Indian outsourcers and the purchase approach of American (at least some) customers. I think he's spot on. In the article, Mr. Purohit describes an American customer that is seeking a specific product - lets call it a "round hole", and the Indian seller trying to push "square peg" solutions into it. Every customer need could be met "easily," even t

"But he SAID it was important to him!"

How often does someone tell you that their weight (or organic or the environment) is important to them, but then, when they have a chance to try a product or program that helps that, they flake? Research shows what we all know: there's almost always a disconnect between values people say they have, and what they actually do and spend money on. "A whopping majority of Americans shoppers may consider themselves environmentalists, but, according to the Journal of Industrial Ecology, only 10-12%

Frustrations with the Lack of Loss

I have been sticking to my exercise routine and have recently upped the duration and exertion in each session, but I am still frustrated with the lack of progress on my problem areas. My problem areas being every part of my body except my forehead, forearms, hands, and feet. I don't really need to lose any weight in any of those areas. I am seeing some funky veins and stuff on my forearms, but my gut and thighs still belong to a McDonald's Lifetime Eatcheivement Award winner. This is very disapp

Practical Tips to Lessen Fat in Food Part 2

More tips equals more fat lost! Listen up! 1.    When you see fat in the meat, trim it, even before you cook it! 2.    Choose lean! In shopping for meat, opt for the lean parts. A great clue is that if the cut ends in â€"loin, it’s lean! 3.    Flavor with herbs instead of sticky sauces that may have butter or margarine 4.    When cooking chicken, remove the skin! You know it’s where the oil soaks in! 5.    When possible, eat raw! Raw food doesn’t have to be cooked so you won’t be needing any

What to Eat on the 3D Dirty Diet

I am naming my eating plan the 3D dirty diet. I can't guarantee results - I can only tell you that it is working for me - 7 DAYS WITHOUT A BINGE and no urge for one. The longest I have gone in the past two months (yes I was bingeing pre-comp but I didn't tell anyone). Guidelines (no RULES) 1. Eat 5 meals a day 3-4 hours apart. Work this out before hand and have an external reminder to eat. I have my alarm on my watch tell me when it is time for a meal. You might need to put lunch closer

5 Tips For Summer Festival Fun

Here in my neck of the woods there is an endless supply of neighborhood cookouts, outdoors festivals and the like. While they are a lot of fun and a great way to meet new friends, it’s very easy to get off track. You start out the day hoping to score some homemade crafts and hear live music and the next thing you know you’ve eaten your way through a bag of kettle corn and are passed out in a beer tent. Here are some helpful tips on how to enjoy yourself but not overdo it. Pre-Game. No not on b

Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats

Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats by Mary Enig and Sally Fallon flouts conventional wisdom by revealing that so-called healthy vegetable oils (such as corn and soybean) are in large part responsible for our national obesity and health crisis, while the saturated fats traditionally considered “harmful” (from such foods as coconut, butter, and meat) are essential to weight loss and health. Just in time for the FDA’s new mandatory trans fats labeling, the three programs in t

A Great Fat Loss Solution

I'm going to share a little with you on a great fat loss solution. You'll notice that I said fat loss and not weight loss. New Obesity Treatment Blocks Vagus Nerve

Doctors are searching for less extreme and less invasive alternatives to bariatric surgery. Right now, there are 2 main bariatric surgery techniques. One is a bypass procedure that removes part of the stomach and reroutes the passage of food. The other puts a band around the top of the stomach to decrease its capacity to hold food. Both are major surgeries with the possibility of serious side effects. But now doctors are testing an implantable device which blocks the vagal nerve. It’s known

Dental Disease

Why I am a fan of Leora Pinhas

She's a psychiatric director for the eating disorders program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. At the recent Canadian Pediatric Society Conference, Dr. Pinhas said two things that endeared her to me. First, she compared childhood eating disorders to cancer: "We have this thing that [they're] not really serious. But one in 10 will die. We need to act like it's a serious illness." Thank you, Dr. Pinhas.* And thank you even more for going on to put the question of eating disor

Fergie Shares Celebrity Weight Loss Regimen

Perhaps you’ve noticed: Fergie is frickin’ ripped. Her concerts alone will keep her in decent shape - but you don’t get that body without working out. Fergie and her trainer, Natasha, recently shared her awesome workout tips. Check it out below - and then get off the couch! Cardio training: A half-hour, 3-to-5-mile run or a 45-50 minute 5-mile run. Not necessarily at a very fast pace, however. Shoulders: Work the front and back of the shoulder, using 1.5-kg weights. Front raises for 2 minute

I can read you like a cook: A review of “Kitchen Literacy”

As the local-food movement broadens and more people find pleasure in shopping at the local farmers markets and/or in growing their own produce, we find more folks ‘fessing up to their lack of expertise. How do you know when a fruit or vegetable is ripe? What’s the difference between various cuts of meat? What’s in season when, and how best to cook or preserve it? Once upon a time, that knowledge lay more neatly within reach. When families grew their own food, raised their own livestock, or bou

Jenny Craig ads are coming down

Some of you have been asking me "What's up with the Jenny Craig ads? You said you don't like their program, and now you're supporting them. Huh?" I just noticed the ads today, and have asked my blog advertising network to take them down. I didn't realize Jenny Craig ads were coming into the inventory so that's my bad for not staying on top of that. You are correct, I'm not a fan of paid weight loss programs that rely on you eating their packaged foods in order to reach your goal. I'm okay wit

Episode 4x13 -- Shine On You Crazy Island by Anna

Hey All, How have you all been?? Well it has been about a month since the Season 4 finale aired and most of you are just itching for your LOST fixes. it has been a long, exhausting week. right now, i have a headache, and i’m fighting to stay awake. i can’t wait until 5 p.m. here are some pictures and a short video clip from the debate on tuesday. it was great fun, and the candidates said we had them sweating. that’s funny because i didn’t even get to ask my toughest questions. to add to the suckiness of this week, i’m not very pleased with my first week off the phentermine. i’m down 0.4 pounds from last week, but last week was durin

I’ve been doing it two days now and it’s a big EYE OPENER that I wanted to share….. You should find a direct link if you look to the right of this blog page under the

Memoir of fat camp a funny, heartfelt tale

The only summer camp I ever went to was Girl Scout camp. I don’t remember how old I was, or much about it at all, other than my cabin got the award for being the cleanest and I had a freak out when they tried to make me jump in the pool (I couldn’t then and still now can’t swim). But I imagine if I’d been a little older, and if I’d gone to a camp with boys, it would have been similar to the experiences Stephanie Klein shares in her new book Moose: A Memoir of Fat Camp. Except probably without

Weight Loss and Nutrition From a Mother's View

When you have a child, as a mother, you do everything possible to make sure your child is given the best nutrition available for that child. As your child grows, it's important to make sure your child is given a proper, nutritionally, well balanced meal even down to the snacks that your give your child fruit being a better more nutritional snack than say cookies or chips. You actually become your own nutritionist. Same goes for exercise and the overall well being of the child. So what happens to all of this knowledge when it comes down to taking care of ourselves and our own well being.

Women - What is Your Body's Baseline Calorie Requirement?

How many calories do you need just to maintain? If you go by the cereal box captions you could be way off! There are many factors to consider but there is a simple way to get a baseline, starting point. As a sports nutrition consultant, and a master's runner, I was curious at what the recent data tells us. It is clear to me that as I've aged, my calorie requirement has gone down. The good part about this is that you, or I can add additional calories to our diet by exercising more, or we can lose weight by eating the same and adding exercise to the equation. Let's talk details...

Eating to Live! How I Lost Over 140 Pounds All Naturally

I want you to know that I have struggled with my weight for over 15 years. I was squeezing into a size 26 dress and it was about to burst. Then I burst into tears and did not go back to that dress shop until (I vowed) I lost the weight I wanted to lose. I made an appointment with my homeopathic doctor, he prescribed a natural supplement and in 8 months (over 2 years ago) I had lost over 140 pounds. I went from a size 26 to a size 2. I wasalso cured of diabetes in the process of the weight loss. I can show you how I did it. I can tell you how I cook and eat to live now instead of living and cooking to eat. I am with you in your struggle. Sometimes I did not want to get out of bed because I dreaded the task of looking for something to wear. I hated going shopping for clothes because I hated going into the plus size section. Also, the disease of diabetes, that had taken out over half my family, was lurking behind my door. Use your iPhone to remotely control iTunes

Use your iPhone to remotely control iTunes I’ve thought for some time that it would be awesome if I could control iTunes from my iPhone. I tend to just let my tunes play throughout my house, as my speakers can be heard throughout most of the house. Unfortunately when I want to pause the music or change a song, I have to run to my computer. Well it seems that Apple already has something up their sleeve in this department. For those that have downloaded the pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 (for

A big fat apology to those who have sent me emails recently. My professional email account is regularly deluged with some 700-something emails, a couple hundred of which I haven’t even read yet, so the last thing I want to do when I get home is check my three personal email accounts. Minka Kelly Not Too Concerned with Weight Loss

When it comes to celebrity diets and weight loss tips, Minka Kelly’s is simply this: love yourself, and don’t worry all that much about it. I like to eat!” Sorry, guys. Minka Kelly is keeping those curves. The actress, who once dated John Mayer and has recently been linked to De

Farewell

It is weird to talk about someone in the past tense. Even difficult that that someone is now relegated to the past tense never to be mentioned in the present and future tenses. He was funny. He was smart. He had character. He was so young. You wanted to hang out with him because he made sense and did not pander to posturing bullshit. Thaddeus Reantaso was all that. He was 32. The last time I saw Thaddeus or Tads I was walking in the crowded Palma Hall lobby at the heart of UP Diliman. This w

One Forgotten Tip When it Comes to Your Mini Skirt Makeover

One of the keys to looking sexy in your mini skirt, improving your metabolism and increasing your Thermic Effect of Food during the day is to eat every 2 to 3 hours of your waking day, including consuming lean protein with each meal or snack. Researchers from Queen's Medical Centre in the United Kingdom reported that subjects who ate meals at irregular times showed significantly lower TEF than those who ate at regular times - i.e., every 2 to 3 hours during the waking day.

What do Governor Gregoire’s actions mean for local Countrywide employees and short selling homeowners?

Is Governor Gregoire just a little too late in regards to Countrywide’s lending tactics? Aren’t we merely days away from the Bank of America takeover? As I drove back to the office today after teaching yet another short sale class, I heard the news on KIRO 710 AM that Governor Gregoire is seeking to pull Countrywide’s lending license because of an investigation that uncovered predatory lending practices aimed at minorities.  WA State will fine Countrywide 1 million dollars for discriminatory l

Getting Abs For the Beach

I wanted to take the time to share some of the hardest knowledge I've learned. It was for getting abs for the beach. I always tried to get myself ready for the summer, but I just couldn't get it to work. I eventually learned that I wasn't doing the correct things. I was just doing misinformation that I probably picked up from an infomercial. I'm going to share with you a few things that really make results when it comes to abs.

The Judiciary Committee meets. So it goes.

As one of the few Pinkers who got through the Capitol cop dragnet outside of the House Judiciary Hearing today, I felt I should describe this scene. The Judiciary committee met today to revisit the infamous "Torture Memos" written by John Yoo and David Addington. This is the one with the quote about how it's okay up until pain "equivalent to organ failure." (I don't know how they quite figure that one. When you torture a subject, do you regularly check in: "so, do you feel like one of your

Video Games And Health Therapy Get A New Equation with Ubisoft

On one hand we have people pumping in $8.2 million to12 research teams to study and discover if there could really be any medical benefits from playing videogames. On the other hand we have Miyamoto telling us the Wii Fit should not be used as a fitness machine, but as a tool to make us aware of our body. However there is still another section that believes in the success of the Wii Fit and is introducing new titles with a healthy focus. The French game publisher Ubisoft's "Allen Carr's Easyway

Food. And Planning.

The latest WW cookbook "Secrets of Success - Our Slimmers Favourite Recipes". I spent a few hours yesterday organising my week food-wise. Someone spoke up at my Weight Watchers meeting and said that tracking points and planning meals takes up so much time. She asked the group if anyone had any tips on how to 'lighten' the burden? It can't be denied, planning does take time - but planning is an investment. You put in, so you get back. I'm the first to admit I'm not a natural planner. These day

Nibbles: More gym classes don’t help kids, Acomplia OK’d in UK, and unlocking the chocolate genome

More PE didn’t make kids skinnier Some people blame the increase in obese kids on the decrease of physical activity mandated by the schools, but a Canadian study showed that more gym classes didn’t make kids thinner. Researchers looked at 13 different trials, ranging in length from six months to three years, to determine if more exercise significantly changed the body mass index of participants. None of the studies, which included nearly 10,000 children in all, showed that the kids who got the

Weight loss helper - Omega-3

A new study reports that eating foods rich in Omega-3 may help you to lose weight. Omega-3 boosts satiety during weight loss: study says: “‘The most important finding of this study is that subjects who eat a dinner rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids feel less hunger and more full directly after and 2 hours after then their counterparts fed with the low long chain omega-3 fatty acids diet,’ wrote the authors. ‘This observation indicates that long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulate hunge

SuperYid Youkilis Drubs The Hardly Punchless RedBirds [Purple Prose]

Slate's Robert Weintraub, like many of us, loves the old purple prose of early 1900s sportswriting, the Grantland Rices, the men who painted epic tales of warriors, grizzled combatants and lardywarks too manly to wear gloves. In an occasional series, Weintraub writes about the week's best baseball game in the style of the vaunted sportswriters of yesteryear. This week: The Red Sox 13-inning win over the Cardinals on Sunday. In a swampy soup more Bayou than Beantown, God’s Tears threatened to f

Wii Fit Gets Results

If you doubt the effectiveness of Nintendo’s Wii system for getting in shape - think again. Micky DeLorenzo, the man who lost 9 pounds only “working out” with Wii Sports has beat his former personal best. DeLorenzo worked out solely using the new Wii Fit, and after 45 days he dropped a whole 15 pounds. In the process his body fat dipped down to 18.4% from 20.8%. Engadget reports: Of course, DeLorenzo admits that doing anything involving movement an extra 60 minutes a day will result in some

Jennifer Nicole Lee Fitness Model Program Review - Is This Fitness Program a Scam?

You may have heard of the Fitness Model Program that claims to be able to help anyone achieve the lean and slim bodies that fitness models have. This fitness program is created by the famous model Jennifer Nicole Lee, but does that necessarily make the program good? Having been struggling to lose that last few pounds of fat on my body for a long time, I decided to try out this program hoping that it would deliver the results that Jennifer claims is possible.

Cleanse, schmeanse.

Oprah's doing it. Dooce tried it. I've heard talk of it for years now. But after reading a bit of the sugary (no pun intended) blog of the former and the wrenchingly honest blog of the latter... no thank you. It's common knowledge that the SAD (Standard American Diet) has taken a huge plunge into the depths of digestive hell, and we are ALL guilty of our vices. Chocolate, alcohol, fried food, processed food, salt, fat, sugar, smother-it-in-Ranch, whathaveyou. But I cannot possibly fathom hav

Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Have you asked this question to yourself? Why are the extra pounds so hard to shed? Research websites like naturalnews.com site these 4 reasons as the bulge culprits: 1.    Lack of Exercise and Bad Eating Habits- You’ve probably heard this before,- it’s not enough to cut calories. Exercise has to be integrated to your program to speed up your metabolism, and to build up muscle that does the same. This, coupled with too much consumption of junk and fast food ultimately leads to weight gain. 2.

"Why would I buy from you? YOU don't look healthy yourself."

Does your appearance interfere with your sales? Last year we had quite a controversy when I reported a comment an old friend of mine made earlier that year. I'd taken her to a local meeting of one of the big mlm nutrition companies. Several thousand reps were in attendance to learn more about the science behind their products. After mixing with folks around the main auditorium, and meeting a dozen or so people I knew, she asked me: "Kim, these people don't look healthy to me. They're mostly ov

Losing Weight With Cardio Workouts

Losing Weight With Cardio Workouts Filed under: Anything Goes, Fitness, Health To lose weight safely and naturally you need to burn more calories than you take in. Even if you don’t eat very much you won’t lose weight if you aren’t active enough to burn the calories necessary to create this calorie deficit. To help your body burn the extra calories needed for weight loss you need to do cardiovascular workouts a few times per week. Once you start performing regular cardio workouts you should s

Pluto in Capricorn and Indigo Children

By Dr Dawne Kovan Every time I pick up an astrological journal or even an ordinary newspaper, I read doom and gloom articles that seem designed to send us even deeper into a slough of despond. The recession, the major shifts in corporate power, modern slavery - all coming as the inevitable result of Pluto entering Capricorn. I tend to look at life somewhat differently - in that I see it as a process of developing and shifting social and technological mores and values. I also work with the Law

The Pen and Paper Diet By Michael Dow

NYT 5:43 NYS 3:46 LAT tba CHE tba CS tba WSJ tba Watching a competition show, The Next Food Network Star, I heard one contestant say "My heart was literally going a mile a minute." Now, technically, the speed of the heart is measured in beats per minute. Let's see...a mile a minute is 60 miles an hour, right? So for a heart to literally be going 60 miles an hour, it would have to be located in a motor vehicle traveling down the highway, wouldn't it? In this case, the contestant was in

Summer Holidays Tomorrow

Oh no!! If tonight is anything to go by then the next 7 weeks or so are going to be very long indeed. I'm already counting down the days to the restart date of August 20th. I've got two separate week-long breaks booked - the kids and I. The second week especially will be great because we're staying on my cousin's farm where, more than 40 years ago, I spent many happy summer holidays. I hope I manage more time to myself this summer because last year in the 6 weeks' summer holidays I had only 4

Mary J Blige’s Breast Implants

The Queen of Hip-hop Soul, Mary J, Blige is much loved for her music, but much criticized for her obvious breast implants. Mary J Blige was nominated at this year’s BET Awards for best Female R&B vocalist (see Make Me Heal’s story on Plastic Surgery at the BET Awards). While Alicia Keys walked away with the award, Mary J walked away with breast implants. 37 year old Mary J. Dear Forbes Traveler: Is Margie's Really the Best Ice Cream in Chicago?

From Eating Out Margie's sundae sure looks good, but is it Chicago's best? Photograph from lisa_h on Flickr. There’s nothing more exciting than a “best of” list from a national publication, probably written from a cubicle and based on surfing a few websites. People who actually live in the spotlighted regions perk up when an outsider chooses the best. Blogger Andrew Huff of Gapers Block, for example, was not a fan of Forbes Traveler's choice for best Chicago ice cream in a recent national

The Responsibility of Feminism

Has Feminism helped or harmed American women since the second wave in the 1960's? Maybe a little of both but we are living in a time where Feminism has hindered our entire society more than it has helped it. In the time of chivalry women were treated with respect and revered for the essentials of what they were. As chivalry died so did the respect women received and that respect was replaced with expectation and humiliation. Men, rather than a female’s unique skills and inherent abilities, defi

About every three months he has some major kickboxing tournaments in which he needs to drop the weight so that he can go down a weight division.

Forty Pounds Down!

I'm having trouble crossing that 300lb mark, but I'm officially down 40lbs now. I've lost 12% of my gross body weight so far. That's huge. I'm still huge, but not as huge... I'm still sticking with Atkins, because it's working. And please note that when I say Atkins I don't mean that I'm eating bacon by the ton. This is more of a vegetables and meats thing. Today I had meatloaf (breadcrumb free), green beans, red leaf lettuce salad from our garden, and water. I'm stuffed, and I feel great. Th

I know that his office sells it, it's about $50 I think, but it's behind a locked glass cabinet, so I can't read the ingredients. And when I say this girl is mel

The fast food nation

Sorry it’s been a while since I blogged, but I have an excuse, I’ve been on the road. Last week we headed to Minneapolis for the annual Back to the ’50s car show. Amidst all the cars is a huge assortment of vendors, including all the foods one would expect at a carnival type

Reader Survey

Now that the summer holidays have begun (well, for me, at least), I found it a good time to start wondering whether Star Crossed can be improved somehow. It’s been ages since I changed something on this blog, and I’ve basically been using the same blogging format for two years now. This is why it seemed an interesting idea to run some sort of reader survey. Perhaps some nice idea will come from it. Let me start with the following question: which part of Star Crossed do you like best? easy-pol

Why Not Try Home Remedies For Weight Loss

I used to have cats of my own years ago... as a matter of fact I used to raise Siamese cats. But... being single and busy for a few years after a major move...I just didn't get more righ

The Financial Cost Of Being Overweight Or Obese

If you remove all the scientific jargon, media hype about weight and obesity and just use 'commonsense and a bit of logic' it is evidently transparent that overweight and obesity is a psychological disorder. If you have read my article on 'The Law of Attraction and Its Benefits' you will understand that the social-environmental factors and the things that we attract in our life are reflect ant of what we are today. If we just concentrated on using more commonsense and rational thinking, then we would be more receptive and understanding better about the underlying factors and necessary questions we really should be asking 'The Why questions before using the How Answers'.

Why should I weight train ?

Fitness is made up of a number of components and strength training is just one of them. Each facet of fitness follows different principles of training and need to be trained separately. So while cardiovascular workouts strengthen your heart and lung capacity making you more resistant to diseases, resistance training can help in other ways. Thus when one goes for a program, it is beneficial that all aspects are practiced to give an all-round balance of functions. A very good reason for weight t

One of the best sites that includes diet reviews is: 1. When it Comes to Losing Weight What Can Work For You?

I don't want to discourage the notion of upping intake of healthy fats to compensate for carb diminution, but it's also worth bearing in mind that carbs are NOT an essential nutrient, and that, although protein is not stored in the body for use as energy, if you consume enough protein to exceed the need/capacity of the body to metabolize it for muscle repair/building, it will be used for energy or, to the extent not necessary for energy production, converted for storage as fat (and subsequent conversion from fat to energy).

DC & Marvel: What's the Difference?

What is the difference? I think, with Paul and Jim each producing a thoughtful piece regarding DC Comics, it's got me thinking about what it is that makes people prefer one company over another.  I've never been able to put my finger on what it is about DC that feels one way, and what it is about Marvel that feels another. Also, I realize that there are other comics out there, being made by other companies, and if I had to choose one superhero book right now, it would be Invincible, and that d

Man’s Wii Fit experiment comes to an end, 15 pounds shed

As you may recall, Mickey DeLorenzo rose to some degree of internet stardom a little over a year ago by dropping a whopping nine pounds using Wii Sports as his sole exercise routine and, after packing on a few pounds, he decided to give it another go using Nintendo’s latest weight-shedding wonder: Wii Fit. Unlike a certain other would-be success story, DeLorenzo actually managed to complete his experiment, and the results are fairly impressive. After 45 days, he managed to shed a full 15 pou

“BAM! BAM! BAM!” said the false prophet

Faith evangelist Todd Bentley has drawn hundreds of thousands to his Florida Healing Revival to “soak in the glory and spread the fire.” Before you pack up the car or purchase an airline ticket and head to Lakeland Florida, here’s a word of warning: Christians who play with fire will get burned. All the controversy over the Lakeland Outpouring is causing deep division within the Church. Some Christians believe Bentley is bringing a long overdue revival. They argue that since people are getting

Dear Steph: Help! My Inner Resistance Monster has taken over the driver's seat

Dear Steph, I have a more philosophical question about the Inner Resistance Monster. Where does it come from? Mine feels like it's in the driver's seat lately, not the passenger seat, much less the backseat. It feels like it's in charge and despite my best intentions, it's hell bent on cookie binging and making excuses for skipping workouts. Can you discuss where it comes from, what it responds to and of course, how to get it out of the driver's seat. Heather ---------------- Dear Heathe

The Nut from Brazil

My favorite nuts are Brazil nuts which mainly come from the Amazon Valley. Brazil nuts are tree nuts, of a giant wild tree and grow clumped together in large, round, woody and extremely hard seed pods the size of a coconut. They are very nutritious and are a complete protein so are excellent for vegetarians and Vegans. Raw Brazil nuts contain the highest natural source of selenium. They are also an excellent source of magnesium and a good source of vitamins B1, B6 and E, dietary fiber, phosphor

Struggling…again

I feel like a whiny-butt. I haven’t had anything positive in weight loss to post here in what seems like forever. Since I have quit work (3 weeks ago, today), I have been busy beyond belief. I used to sit at my desk for 6-1/2 to 8 hours a day. Now? I’m lucky if I sit for lunch. So why isn’t the scale cooperating? Do I dare commit to a ‘plan’ again? Whenever I announce that I am going to stick with whatever plan at the moment, I feel like I’m setting myself up for failure. Like I know deep d

A Solution to Global Obesity... YOU!

For some of you fitness bunnies, today's article may not be particularly relevant. Sorry 'bout that. Give it to a fat friend perhaps. To be honest, sometimes I get tired of having the same discussions and talking and writing about the same issue - over and over (and over) again. After this post I will give the obesity thing a wide berth (pun intended) for a while. I certainly don't seek out the fat discussion but it invariably seems to find its way to me. More than half of the emails I receive a

Why, Hello!

Hi everyone. My name is Tony. Being fat sucks! I’m sick and tired of not being able to fit comfortably in the desks at my college, so I’m trying to slim down. My method of weight loss involves watching my calories, eating as healthy as possible and exercising daily. Losing weight is a huge struggle for me because I love food, especially the ones with the word cream in them. Whatever though, I’m willing to work hard so that I don’t die of a heart attack when I’m 25.

Interval Training: Walkers Charge Ahead!

Hello serious walkers and the beginners! We are now entering another terrain - efficient walking. This is another three week challenge. I think that a shorter, measurable challenge works the best when we try something new. Here are the RULES: 1. Commit to a number of miles per day that you would like to walk. Make it a reasonable number but remember that you have to stick to it for 21 days. Remember that it's okay to shorten the miles because we will be doing interval walking. 2.

2008 BET Awards Explode with Plastic Surgery

The pyrotechnics that opened Usher’s set at this year’s BET Awards didn’t have nearly as much shock value as the plastic surgery onstage, which was chock full of Make Me Heal’s plastic surgery alumni. Pups & Pounds!

I started to do a Thursday Thirteen and I realized that I was tired of that, so you have just me sitting here writing about a few little things. Like Anneliese. Isn't she just the cutest little thing? She is so sweet too. Hubby and I were talking about this the other day and we are quite amazed at how truly wonderful the two pups are. I imagine we are incredibly partial having had them since the very moment that they were born, but to us, Anneliese and her brother Arnie are just the best! W

Free Bird!

As I mentioned here, I needed a jogging stroller. Needed it. Once upon a time, I was free. I could roam wherever I wanted to go whenever I wanted to do it. I could run to the hills and back. I could run to the corner store. But now things are different. I have been saddled blessed with a child. As I mentioned, all those days ago, I had narrowed down my options to a Bob Ironman or a Mountain Buggy Terrain. Once I had limited my options, I then checked my bank account. A quick trip to Craigsli

Magical Thinking

Things aren’t always as they seem, are they? The other day someone in a weight loss meeting that I attended mentioned that he had been feeling unsuccessful, so he went back to some old food journals from times when he WAS doing well. That inspired him to get back on track. I thought it was a brilliant idea, and decided to follow suit. Lately I’ve been saying to myself “gosh, if only I weighed now what I used to weigh two years ago.” So I decided to dig up an old file I had from May/June 2006.

The Seed of Love

Ok to make my point here, isn't it very odd that if we take a break from taking care of our gardens and lawn that sooner or later our gardens, plants, lawns, flowers, vegetable gardens will die from lack of care? HMM something to think about isn't it? What happens if you don't water that garden? Well let's just say its not a pretty site of dead flowers, we will get frustrated and upset and ask our selves why are my flowers dieing right?

The numbers game: Wasted food and hard times for restaurants

A rotten shame For several years now, American health care professionals and weight loss consultants have hammered away at a few basic themes, one of which has been, “Avoid the cereal, snack, beverage and frozen dessert aisles of the supermarket and load up on fresh fruit and vegetables from the produce section.” And to the extent that fruit and veggie sales have increased nationwide, we would seem to be eating healthier and smarter, right? That’s probably what they thought in the UK, as well

Who Will Wow Us On The Biggest Loser?

The Biggest Loser, NBC’s hit weight-loss focussed reality series, will be premiering in the fall, with it’s sixth season! Casting has begun, and the excitement is already mounting. Not only is the show focused on helping lose weight, but in the process it changes lives forever. In the beginning when The Biggest Loser first began, all the contestants were competing alone and then the producers decided to start have the contestants compete in teams of two, where, for the most part, they knew

6 Pack Abs Without Exercise - Smartlipo - Who is Eligible For Liposuction?

When it comes to defining your body whether it is achieving a more feminine looking hips or a firmer looking six-pack abs, you could try exercise as many others might suggest, but sometimes this exercising just will not do the trick because some people are simply genetically predisposed to have these stubborn little pockets of fat in some of the most obscure places. For people who have to deal with these pot bellies or manly hips, there is an option which is known as liposuction.

Josh Peck creeps me out.

He just creeps me out.  My kids LOVE Drake and Josh - and I think I’ll always see a chubby Josh.  He looks so much different now!  I think I heard he got the band…that would explain all that weight loss! Did any of you see Josh in “Mean Creek”?  That movie was disturbing…and to see Josh in that kind of role - was, well - weird. Anyway, here are Josh Peck and Olivia Thirlby (Juno) at the premiere of their new movie, “The Wackness”. WENN

Music that Gets Me Movin'

I exercise a lot. I love music. It's only natural that the two go hand-in-hand. I must have good music to accompany my exercise (unless I'm using one of my fitness DVDs). I pick songs that are upbeat because my body usually follows the tempo set by the music. The songs may not all be incredibly inspiring or deep, but they keep me going. Here's a list of some of my favorite workout songs, with links to some of their home pages (you'll have to hover over the name to see the link): 1. "Gonna Fly N

The Bloggers Quilt

It is time for a meeting of the minds, the hearts and the hands....through a quilt. I have been blogging for two years now. At first it was all about journaling for me. Writing down what I was feeling and why I thought I had gained so much weight. I blog today for the same reason, but also because I have found my niche in a community of friends that I cherish. I no longer blog for myself, but for the women (and the occasional man) who are grasping for help. We have all experienced life in its m

How Much Cardio Should I Do to Lose Weight?

Cardiovascular activity is strength training for your heart and lungs, as well as the best way to burn fat. The amount of cardio you should be performing is entirely based on your fitness experience. Having lost 50lbs myself, I can say with certainty that you need cardio to lose weight. I've heard talk of losing weight by strength training alone or minimal cardio. This is not true. While weight lifting burns fat by speeding your metabolism on a long term basis, cardio is the fastest way to shed pounds and allow muscle to show through.

Are You Going the Wrong Weigh?

Have you ever watched the movie "Cars" from Pixar? It's set on Route 66, an historic route between Chicago and Los Angeles. After watching the movie with my 14 year old daughter I realized that you can compare the travels of Route 66 with your weight loss journey. Think about it, have you ever hit a bump in the road by a holiday, night out on the town or a summer fair and vacations, stress or summer of BBQ's now have become a detour. Scenic tours, slowed or nonexistent progress can also be compared to traveling Route 66. Preparing yourself and learning from your past experiences can help keep you on track without getting lost.

Weight Loss Wednesday

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 Weight Loss Wednesday I recently discovered a fascinating weight loss fact. The above Sweet and Salty bar has very healthy ingredients.  It has a lot of fiber.  It has protein.  It is low in fat and has zero transfats.  And it's quite tasty.  It has 170 calories. I need not describe what the Haagen-Daz Vanilla and Swiss Almond bar has to offer, right?  It's to die for.  It's the yummiest.  I'm sure it's full of fat.  But it's the snack size.  I actually like t

WFMW: BBQ-ing with Charcoal Chimneys

Nothing says summer like a beautifully grilled fat, juicy, hamburger, steak, ribs, chicken... well -- you get the picture... And, while a gas grill is easy, it just doesn't taste as good as a charcoal grilled slab o' meat. We own both a charcoal grill and a propane grill, but we rarely ever use the propane grill. In fact, we grill year round -- with charcoal. Yup! It's that good! Well, actually, "we" don't grill, my husband grills, and that's who this tip comes from. Most people don't like to

It’s Healthbolt Carnival time again.

Yes, it’s time again for another jam packed edition of the Healthbolt Carnival. I’ve done very little editing on this time around, leaving the posts in the order they arrived and only removing those that didn’t fit and those who sent in more than one post from a blog. As a result, we’ve ended up with a diverse collection of articles for you all to check out. Happy reading. And let us know what your favorite is… Brandon Patchin presents Intensity Propensity: The Importance of High Int

Colin Farrell Drops 40 Pounds For Movie

Actor Colin Farrell has dropped a ton of weight for his upcoming role as a war photographer in the new movie “Triage.” According to The Daily Mail Although he has lost as much as [forty pounds] for the Bosnian film, the 32-year-old looked every inch the Adonis with his long hair and sand-covered six-pack… as he jogged along the beach. You won’t find many like 2010 top 10

The 2010 high school recruiting class is a sight unseen. Any of the top 10 players could be the best in the class. You won’t find many players who are as physically talented along the defensive line as the top overall player in the class, defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat. Just as Jimmy Clausen was referred to in 2007 and Reggie Bush was in 2003, Jackson is the type of kid who is seen once in a decade. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound lineman from Plano, Texas, was one of just two sophomores to make the T

Confessions of a Health and Fitness Editor: Part 2

After a short blip off the City Pulse radar, I’m back to confess my progress thus far! As you all know, I started training with Mike Shaw of New York Personal Training 4 weeks ago with a goal of losing 10-15 lbs. in one month. Since then, I’ve been training with Mike for 30 minutes a day/5 times a week followed by a 30-minute intense cardio session on my own. Since starting at NYPT, I’ve steadily been losing inches and pounds. This week, Mike decided to speed up my weight-loss by putting

Jodie Sweetin Pens Weight Loss Diary

Dear Diary: This crystal meth tastes awesome!!! That’s what an diary entry by Jodie Sweetin would have read as recently as a few years ago. But the former Full House star has come a long way. Following her pregnancy, Sweetin is now penning a diary for OK! Magazine. But it focuses on weight loss, not drug use. Check out the actress latest entry, regarding a pool party thrown by Dave Coulier: I was scared to even try on the bathing suit at first, but I put it on and despite horribly unattracti

Return of the Too Tight Shirt Challenge…

Well I need some good motivation, so why not bring back a familiar face…errr…shirt.  Remember this: Yup, looks nice on him.  On me it has a certain ability to accentuate my fat rolls to the tenth degree.  So for the sake of public record here is some information about the current state of my body. The Starting Line.  Today is June 25th.  As of today I weigh 178.  I went over and plugged my numbers into the on-line body fat estimator. For those who want to know the input values: Waist at

Day 12 Home 2

She looks slightly better today. Still slightly dehydrated. We will need to syring her more water after each feeding since she is not drinking enough on her own. Her appetite is slightly better. I managed to syringe her some k/d wet food in one seating without much fuss. As her weight is still only 3.5kg, a loss of 10% before she was ill, getting food into her system is important. We will have to feed her more to assist in her weight gain. We finally let her meet the rest of the gang today aft

How Weight Loss Supplements Work

Are you looking for an extra boost to your diet program? Maybe you should try some dietary supplement. However, remember that you should always clear with your doctor first before taking any new medication. It is also the same when you are taking another medication, even if the said medication is a herbal and natural remedy. How do diet pills work? These drugs have effective ingredients in them that spur the body to lose weight. However, you need to make sure the diet pills you take have safe and effective ingredients in order to prevent any damaging side effects.

Project Wonderful is pretty wonderful

I’ve been playing with Project Wonderful on one of my sites after more than a few people mentioned it to me (I think Empress was among them, but can’t find the original post), and here’s what I’ve found: It takes a while to get going. Give it at least a month before giving up on it. It attracts more “real bloggers” than internet marketing types. You’re more likely to get ads for someone’s online novel or “going green” site than a spammy weight loss site. If you have the right site, it can real

One Year Later

Well, here I am one year later, almost to the day. It was this time a year ago when I joined this site, made the decision to make a true effort at losing weight, started the South Beach Diet, and lost 15 pounds over the summer. Overall, it’s been a good year. I’ve maintained most of my weight loss, although this summer I am out to lose 10 more pounds. I ran my first 5k ever, and although I regained some weight and haven’t been to the gym in three weeks at this point, I still feel like the past

A Good Nutrition Plan to Help in Weight Loss

It can be difficult to prepare meals. Mothers usually have the burden of thinking of meals that are not only inexpensive but also healthy. Since it is hard to think of good meals to prepare for the family, some go to shortcuts by just dining out, which does not exactly mean healthy. But what most of us do not realize is that creating a healthy diet menu is easy and simple. It won't cost you a lot nor won't require expert skills in the kitchen. What you have to keep in mind however is that your meals should be complete and well-balanced.

Cats can suffer from diabetes too!

Diabetes is a very common disease among people and believe it or not, among cats as well. There are two main reasons why your cat may suffer from diabetes: - the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, this is known as diabetes type 1; - the body does not respond to insulin as it should; this is diabetes type 2; The cats that suffer from diabetes can not take advantage of glucose as they should, thing that leads to some conditions like: - hyperglycemia, which means high levels of sugar i

A sentiminal nod to print

The print edition of Slovenly Peter my grandmother read to my siblings and me that still bears the crayon imprint of my little brother - along side its replacement? Call me a sentimental slob, but I woke up this morning feeling sorta mournful. My Kindle arrived via UPS yesterday afternoon and I spent some time playing/learning/reading the device last evening. I am planning to take it and NO print books to ALA and NECC. The acid test. It is eminently, uh, pragmatic. I've been an advocate for

The Body Positive

My friend Jen pointed me to a great organization, The Body Positive. They do work with people through the Health At Every Size model of health, and they place a good deal of their focus on restructuring how we imagine our own bodies. Jen, who has worked as a fitness trainer for many years, had this to say: Two years ago I had the great fortune of meeting Connie Sobczak. Connie is the co-founder of The Body Positive, a non-profit organization created with the purpose of helping people overcome n

In Which I Probably Sound Like a Misogynist Asshole

1) Occasionally I visit blogs that are highlighted on the WordPress main page.  Yesterday, I stopped by a site with a post saying that weight loss isn’t an accomplishment to be celebrated, and that it’s offensive when people say “Oh, you look like you’ve lost weight â€" good for you!”  I agree with this, unless you know that someone has been working to lose weight for health reasons.  I think it’s presumptuous at best, and insulting at worst, as it implies that you thought less of the person pri

Amazing Substitutions

Ok, we all know that basic substitutions can really go a long way in helping us lose weight. We’ve established that, but don’t you wonder by how much exactly? Studies have said that by simple substitutions, one can lose half a pound in a week. That’s actually a good and healthy amount to lose in that amount of time. Here’s a more accurate list of the change in calories, when you actually apply food substitutions! 1. If you drink water instead of juice for breakfast, you save about 120 calori

Kirstie Alley packs it on

They exaggerate her "collapse", it was just a faint, it was hot out. But, the picture seems real. Sources say Kirstie has gained almost a 100 pounds since losing 75 for Jenny Craig and then quitting the program. I feel bad for the woman, addictions are hard to beat and she can't be healthy, but, she needs to stop flapping about making her own weight loss program to sell us and also about the Scientology crap. If Scientology cures all, why can't she put down the corn dogs and do some sit ups? On

new pill on the market

In this generation we live right now, It's almost hopeless to cease the cause of Obesity, don't you think? It's like a pandemic that goes on and on and never stops. How do we resolve this problem anyway? Well others turn into pills and other drugs that may be harmful to one's health. I had a share of my own weight lose grief and tried weight lose supplements myself. but I'm telling you, it's hard. me and my co worker were talking stories about losing weight, and what products we had tried i

Beginnings

Sometimes it’s hard to say what is a novel, what is a short story or novella. One generally points to matters of quantity - length. Most agree that novels consist of at least 50.000 words, mostly somewhere between 80.000 and near infinity; from Hearts of Darkness to Stephen King. In short stories, one is expected to write - or read - every word as if it is crucial to the larger meaning of the work, that if you take the word away, we shall all feel the loss. While in novels there is an assumpt

How to Lose Back Fat

Excess back fat is a problem for many people, especially those who are approaching or indeed are well in to middle age, it is part of the blight known as middle-age spread (MAS), where the abdominal area of the body develops a roll of fat, sometimes called a "spare tire". There are a number of reasons for the onset of MAS, firstly there is the unstoppable effect of gravity. Forty-odd years of walking upright takes its toll as looser-fitting areas of skin are gradually pulled "south," other affected areas are face, breasts and neck.

How a Vegetarian Diet Can Help You to Lose Weight

Are you a vegetarian hoping to shed some excess pounds? Then there are some information which can come in useful for you. Do you know that vegetarians are classified into three types- vegans, lacto, and pesce. Also, vegetarians consume lesser calories compared to individuals who eat mean. Typically, a vegetarian consume 500 fewer calories as compared to a friend who eats meat. Vegetarians are also slimmer, with fewer health problems like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. In fact, over 6% of vegetarians are considered "obese" as compared to meat eaters who have 45% of their population considered as "obese"

Behind.

I’m down 2 pounds this week.  Last week, I gained 1.8.  I swear all I’m doing is going up, then down, then up.  It’s driving me insane.  Well, it doesn’t help that I no longer go to the gym, opting “instead” to take walks around the neighborhood (what with the weather being super hot and nice last week).  But really, I think that was just an excuse to cover up my laziness.  I did a 35-minute walk around the neighborhood once last week!  Gone are the days where I was hitting the gym 4x a week.

What is a Sample Meal Like on the Fat Loss 4 Idiots Diet?

In this article we are going to discuss what a sample meal looks like on the fat loss 4 idiots diet. With so many programs to choose from, and often murky, mysterious and secretive language being bandied about with EACH new weight loss program that hits the market, I thought it would be helpful to shed a little bit of extra light on what REALLY goes on behind the scenes when you start to shift. Calorie shift, that is..:-) Continue reading as I illuminate what you should expect to be eating on your way to a radically new bod! Read on..:-)

Finding the right job for me….

Well I’m a stay at home mommy who needs to get out into this crazy world to help support my family. I’ve continued to put in apps at the places i think would be fun, but it always seems like with every job there is a catch. I love to take pictures ans so I put in an app for a photography job. It sounds like it would be a great job except one big thing. It’s TONS of driving. I hate to drive. Infact I’m pretty nervous driving in the city. It pays really good though. What to do? I feel frustrated

Dark Chocolate Health and Weight Loss Benefits Revealed - Read it and Weep!

I know I'm not the only chocoholic out there who clings desperately to the idea that dark chocolate supports good health. Gotta love it when the media hands you a (hopefully) bonafide justification for your favorite weakness. But just how justified is this one really. I've a sneaking suspicion this might be a case where us chocoholics could be let down. Or maybe not. Let's investigate ...

Over 35 and Beginning to Get Belly Fat?

Some people think that belly fat is just a "way of life" once you have crossed 35 years of age. And for the ones who are below 35 years of age and still have belly fat, well, the same people will say that it must have been hereditary. But the truth is different. Belly fat is definitely not a way of life no matter what your age is.

Lose 1 Pound a Day

Wouldn't it be nice if you could follow a diet program that enables you to lose 1 pound a day? What if there was a diet in which you could lose 1 pound a day: - by being able to eat more food, not less? - by being able to eat as much food as you want at every meal, without regard for counting calories, carbohydrates, or fats?

I went to the gym this afternoon. I did 30 minutes on the arc trainer ("weight loss" mode) and 30 minutes on the stationary bike while reading T is for Trespass. I also did 30 minutes of weight machines while listening to Jesse and Gene's What's in it for us? Jesse and Gene were the morning guys on a couple radio stations here in Toronto years ago. The Mole: Gets Burned!

After last weeks double execution, the players begin tonight showing their shock at what took place, especially the loss of Bobby. Nicole commented that she thought for sure he was the Mole and now she had to start looking elsewhere, whereas Victoria and Craig both were going to miss him. The players travel to the Andes Mountain in Argentina at seventy-two hundred feet altitude and are met by the host, Jon Kelley. One of ‘em says, Boy, the food at this place is really terrible. The other one says, Yeah, I know; and such small portions. The theory behind the Shangri-La Diet says that the more variable the flavors of your food, the less fattening it will be. The problem with junk food is not just the quickly-digested calories (from bread and sugar), it is also the remarkably constant flavor. Coke tastes exactly the same each time. A new study has just come out that supports these ideas. Sprinkling e

L.A. Times Roll of Honor--Those Who Left , 1-12

Those who have left or were forced to leave the Los Angeles Times under the evil domain of the Tribune Co. will, I believe, be heroes, as time passes, and it is realized fully just what Los Angeles and California have lost by their departures. Many of them will surely go on to other outstanding professional endeavors. But even now, it is worth inscribing them in a roll of honor. The valuable blog, "Tell Zell," has begun the work of doing this. But in the next week or so, I propose to continue d

Glam Review: "Ask Again Later" by Jill A. Davis

One of the least pleasant airports in which to get stuck, in my opinion, is Chicago O'Hare. There I was: tired, hungry, grumpy, and wanting nothing more than to get home. My flight had been cancelled due to weather, and I was facing a 6 hr wait. I had only a few chapters left in my book, so I obviously needed a new one. Whoever stocked the bookstore was obviously not on the same wavelength with me, because it took me nearly half an hour to find something I wanted to purchase. It was worth the a

The sport I love

The sport I love is saving my life. Disc Golf is played in parks all over Southern California. I am now a regular player. Most people call me by the nickname Big Joe. I don't mind the new handle. Big Joe and Red have been with me my whole life. I watched the Golden State Classic this past weekend at La Mirada regional park. It was amazing to watch, but boring to the uninitiated. The ability to control a disc may seem easy right up until you try to throw it 450 feet. Become skilled at the sp

I’ve also included some notes following my video post for a few more details. Why Am I Always Hungry?

I have to admit that in the past all of my diet failures were because I was always hungry. I wasn't eating enough and I was eating the wrong foods. Did you know that there are foods that can eliminate hunger while others increase hunger? Its true, think about it for a second: after eating a donut are you full? Do you want to eat more donuts?

Minimally invasive weight loss surgery improves health in teens

Scientists from Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Centre have found that minimally-invasive weight loss surgery significantly improves obesity-related medical complications. The study was conducted over a small group of extremely obese teenagers who received the minimally invasive surgery, also called the laparoscopic gastric banding. Top Ten Races

Every year, there are certain political races that become really important symbolically and substantively in terms of the impact that an election cycle has on the country's politics. In 1994, the fact that Republicans took out Speaker Foley and the giant presence of Gov. Cuomo added to the huge symbolic weight of their victory. In 1998, the fact that we took out both D'Amato and Faircloth, the two leading architects of the Whitewater investigation strategy for the Republicans, had a huge impact

Theology with Sufjan Stevens: heaven in ordinary

At the moment I’m absolutely infatuated with the music of Sufjan Stevens. Commentators have often talked about Stevens’ creativity as a musician and composer; but he’s also an extraordinary lyricist. Many of his best songs are ballads, stories that relate, with simple poignancy, the everyday dramas of friendship, love and family life. And it’s here that Stevens’ poetic gift really lies: the ability to evoke, with just a few words, the tragic and beautiful ambiguities of personal relationships. T

Stuff You Need to Know, Monday, June 23, 2008

Because some things you simply need to know. Here's the day's news in a quick digest form. Because you have better ways to spend your time. We don't. The Academy has given out invites to 105 people so they can help with the popularity contest known as the Oscars. Among those selected: writer Judd Apatow (40-Year-Old Virgin), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men and, yes, The Goonies), scribe Diablo Cody (Juno), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose), Ruby Dee (American G

Historical Footnote: The Church’s Contemporaneous Explanation for its Opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment

The Church’s opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment (the ERA) in the 1970s and early 1980s periodically comes up in discussions of the Church’s involvement in political or social issues. For those of us who were in pre-school in 1980, the substantial paper insert contained in the March 1980 issue of the Ensign (posted below) is instructive about this episode in the history of the Church. I stumbled upon it while browsing through old Ensigns I came across at my ward building a couple of weeks

Weekly Weight Report

Or not so weekly, as it were. Well, we've been trying to juggle getting moved into the new place, keeping up with the girls' activities and schooling, volunteering, work, and attempting to do it all while still not neglecting our friends. It's been quite the performance, but something managed to fall by the wayside. See, in the moving, we misplaced the scale for a bit. So I haven't weighed myself since my last report, back in April. But we've found the scale again now, so I can start back up

The Many Ways You Can Lose Fat

Wii-Exercise Dude Loses More Weight

Wii-Exercise Dude Loses More Weight The original Wii-exercise guy took the new Wii Fit out for a 45 day spin and lost fifteen pounds. He posted pictures on his site (shirtless) of his progress and a video of his workout. Unlike Wii Sports, Wii Fit has a built-in scale and BMI calculator, so I will be using them to keep track as well as my own scale (where I will weigh myself 3 extra times a day to get an average). It also introduces muscle building and toning, so I hope the extra muscle mass

My, what big milestones you have

Today, I became an XS. That’s right - I bought my first ever XS anything. I actually bought three XSs: two tank tops and a running skirt. And to help you understand what a milestone that is, when I first went and bought an official running outfit, I bought the pants, not the shorts. The shorts! Scary! Nope, I got the yoga pants and matching long-sleeved jacket. The jacket, especially, smoothed out the unsightly bulges created by the super-tight tank. The tank has been getting looser every week

{Ohhh..and for the love of TWinkie!}

{no pun intended…I just figured I would refrain from using profanity or his name in vain} Sometimes I just want to scream at people. Here is a typical peek into my daily life filled with questions and comments about my weight loss: “Wow! Look at you Jenny, you have lost so much weight. Did you do it all on your own?” Hmmm…now what other help would I have? You might as well ask an overweight person if they are fat because they sit on the couch all day eating bon bons. “Oh, Jenny, you are too

"Obese Patients Tried on 24 Diets Before Surgery"

After all, if a gastric bypass is the 'right' thing to do for those who are morbidly obese, then why not just do it on your own without the surgery! Well, I am not being critical about surgery, but if anyone eats sensibly and care about their health and well-being, why is surgery required? Further more, I could have used $30k to buy myself a new car.
